Standard pavers dimensions

There is no strict standards defined and even same nominal dimensions pavers produced by two different manufacturers won’t have exactly identical width, length and thickness. But even though actual measurements vary significantly, there are some typical sizes of pavers available in stock at local home improvement retailers or can be easily purchased online and shipped to your home address within few days.

Width, length and thickness in the chart are nominal dimension in imperial units (inches) and metric system (centimeters). Coverage area is a space covered by a single paver measured in square inches and square centimeters. Actual paver size might vary and in some cases can be ¼” – ½” (6.35 mm – 12.7 mm) smaller than its nominal dimensions. Amount of pavers necessary for building 10’ x 12’ (120 ft2) patio includes 5% waste factor.

Shape and style

While designing a patio or driveway, never limit your options to simple square or rectangular pavers. There are many irregular forms and patterns to choose from including triangular, shell or randomly formed products for creating the best appearance and style of a new outdoor addition.

Color

Natural stone pavers always have unique distinctions in color and even same box, not telling about the whole pallet, will contain pavers with unlike shades, vein movements and overall characteristics. Manufactured at factory pavers can be made in almost any imaginable color from light tan and brown to darker green or absolutely black. But man-made products normally much more uniformed when it comes to color.

Weight determination

Actual dimensions of a paver and material it made from will affect the weight. 4” x 8” x 2” (10 cm x 20 cm x 5 cm) concrete paver weight approximately 4 lb. (1.8 kg). 16 in. x 16 in. x 1 in. (41 cm. x 41 cm. x 2.5 cm.) travertine tile weight over 20 lb. (9 kg). But some 24” x 24” natural stone pavers can be extremely heavy what makes it harder to transport and work while completing installation.

Materials factor

Due to its durability and low maintenance, concrete pavers are widely used for building patios, walkways, and driveways. Natural stone including travertine sandstone or slate require some periodical maintenance including sealer application to preserve stone appearance and ensure its long lasting performance. While shopping for new pavers, always check weather resistance of a certain material. Some product might not be suitable for installation in extremely cold climate or coloring pigments might fade overtime after direct contact with sunlight.
